The Newspaper Industry: Canada vs. United States
The Canadian print newspaper market is much more buoyant than that in the United States. In 2009, U.S. ad revenues for print newspapers were down 29 per cent while Canadian revenues were down 11 per cent (with the media market). Experts predict, that in the U.S., print newspaper revenues will decline in 2010 while in Canada, revenues are expected to grow.
The Canadian market is distinctive. Canada has 34 million people with most of the population located near the major cities. Many of the major cities have lots of newspaper competition – a single newspaper market is rare.

Economy
• GDP is growing at same rate however the unemployment rate is lower in Canada
• Canada has five big banks (rather than regional ones) and was not as affected by the housing crisis

• Newspaper print readership in Canada has been stable for the last 5 years
